Africa
English, Latin
Cave
The exact meaning of the name Africa is uncertain, although we all know that it stands for the continent of Africa. The closest hypothesis, however, is that the Romans used to call the 'Carthaginians' Ifri. In Latin, which was the language used by literate Romans, the suffix 'ca' meant 'land'. The meaning of the name as 'cave', however, is from its roots in the Berber language, where 'Ifri' means 'cave'.
