Ariel originates in Hebrew language and means "God's lion". In the English-speaking countries, Ariel is more popular as a feminine given name, probably due to its connotation with Disney's The Little Mermaid. In modern Hebrew, however, it is still more common as a masculine given name, the famous bearer being Ariel Sharon, former Israeli politician and Prime Minister.
