Clarissa is a variant of Clarice, a medieval form of Clara. Clara originates in Latin language and means "bright and clear". It is the feminine form of Clarus. Clara is a more modern spelling, formerly the spelling Clare was more frequent. Clare was the name of several saints, the most prominent being Clare of Assisi, the founder of the Poor Clares order.
