Deirdre originates in Gaelic languages and means "real woman". In Irish mythology, there was a character called Deirdre of the Sorrows due to her tragic fate. She was an inspiration of at least 5 plays, including William Butler Yeats' Deirdre and J.M. Synge's Deirdre of Sorrows. In the United States, the name is fairly rare.
