Ophelia originates in Greek language and means "helpful woman". It was popularized by William Shakespeare in his tragedy Hamlet. Ophelia is the potential wife of Prince Hamlet and as in most Shakespeare's tragedies, she eventually kills herself. Her tragic story has been an inspiration for various artists over centuries. As a feminine given name it is rather rare in the United States today.
