Yin originates in Chinese language and means "in the shade". Initially, it was used as a surname and as a surname it functions until today. Currently, it can also be used as both feminine and masculine given names. In Chinese and Asian philosophy, yin is the opposing, yet complementary, dark force of yang. The concept of Yin Yang literally translates into "dark and light".
