Amadeus T.'s Story
Update from Amadeus T’s Foster home (5-29-16):Amadeus is a strong senior GSD that has lots of energy and loves attention… He is being fostered in a home with 4 other dogs and he especially loves to play and chase a similar sized but much younger GSD… Kole. Amadeus seems to want to “shadow” and stay close to his foster dad… a trait often found with GSDs… but is especially observed during a period after a lengthy stay at a shelter when the ex-shelter dog is still trying to validate the world is a loving place. Amadeus also wants to make sure he is at least getting his fair share of “hands-on” attention when there are other dogs around.
Amadeus appears to have some challenges with his night vision caused by cataracts. After his initial introduction to the foster family he was observed needing some time to recognize his foster Mom when she arrived at home one evening. Daytime vision is not as much of an issue. As Amadeus is settling into his foster home he is also feeling more comfortable with his foster family and its other dogs… Kole and he especially seem to have hit it off and will play until they drop… making them both tired enough to do some serious sleeping that night.
Amadeus is showing that he has some basic command training in his past. He is now sitting on command and will respond to a “down” command as well. The offering of food or treats seems to greatly improve his command recognition as well. :-)
Amadeus now seems to be enjoying love and life at his foster home. It has taken him 2-3 weeks to get to this point. His foster family feels he is a wonderful senior GSD and an adoptive family that has the timeand willingness to go through a caring introduction period will have a dog with a lot of love to give.
Amadeus T. Description:Amadeus is a 10 year old brown & black German Shepherd that was found stray in Contra Costra Country. When he arrived at the shelter he not feeling too well due to sore infected paws, blocked ears and generally missing the comforts of home.
Amadeus is strong and friendly. When we evaluated him at the shelter he was oh-so-happy to get out of his kennel and go for a walk. He would come when called and is strong on the leash even with his recovering paws.
When evaluated with another dog at the shelter he seemed very friendly as well. He was introduced to a female through the fence and gave her many kisses with his tail gently wagging. His approach was very polite.
Amadeus was observed to be polite around food as well...even though he does seem very food motivated. He even took ``high value`` chicken treats offered to him by hand very gently as can be seen in a video link below.
We are still learning more about Amadeus T. and will be updating his bio with more details as we learn them.
Amadeus T. has been accepted into the GSRNC Thulani Program and is headed to a Thulani Foster home where he will receive lots of home comforts as he settles in. The Thulani Program will also see that Amadeus receives updated vaccinations and other medical care necessary to his well being. In addition, The Thulani Program is starting a search for his next adoptive home that will care for him for the rest of his life. He will also come with a supply of food, a cushy pad if wanted, and other goodies such as toys.
Amadeus’s medical expenses will be covered for the rest of his life by The Thulani Program!
